What is OpenRail?

Short:

OpenRail enables shared solutions for shared challenges in rail through open source.

Long:

OpenRail brings together railway operators, infrastructure managers, and technology providers to collaboratively develop open source software that addresses common challenges across the sector. It provides a neutral platform grounded on open principles, international non-profit incorporation, and best practices from the open source community. This enables railways to share development costs, ship faster, and build interoperable systems across borders, while strengthening digital sovereignty through choice, control, and influence over their shared infrastructure.

Key messages

  • OpenRail provides a neutral platform for collaboration of diverse stakeholders, open to the entire railway ecosystem. It is grounded on open principles, the incorporation as international non-profit organization, and best practices from the open source community.
  • OpenRail is how railways realize the value of open source in production: sharing development costs, shipping faster, and building interoperable systems across borders.
