The International Railway Journal (IRJ) has published a feature on how open source is gaining momentum in the railway sector to address persistent challenges such as fragmented systems, high integration costs, and limited interoperability.

At the centre is the OpenRail Association, presented as a key initiative and a neutral platform for the collaborative development of open source software, whose portfolio of five flagship projects already demonstrates how this approach delivers practical solutions across the railway sector.

This momentum is also reflected, according to the article, in OpenRail’s growing community, visible at major industry and open source events, including FOSDEM and its dedicated Railways and Open Transport Devroom. Its inaugural conference in Paris in December 2025 and upcoming participation at InnoTrans further highlight increasing engagement and visibility across the global rail sector.

The article highlights UIC as a passionate advocate for open source, emphasising the need for greater collaboration across the railway sector and the importance of developing and sharing solutions collectively.

Overall, the article portrays OpenRail as a practical and scalable approach to improving interoperability and driving innovation in rail, positioning it as the ideal setting for this journey.

The OpenRail Association would like to thank the International Railway Journal (IRJ) for the opportunity to share insights into the OpenRail Association and for allowing the article to be shared with a wider audience.
